The best comparison is usually the one that makes hidden costs and important terms easier to see before you commit.

A low quote can be a good deal—or simply a quote that leaves important work out. Before choosing a provider, compare the scope and terms as carefully as the price.

The eight questions

  1. What exactly is included in the quoted price?
  2. What could cause the price to change?
  3. Who is responsible for permits, materials, cleanup, or disposal?
  4. When is payment due, and is a deposit required?
  5. Who will actually perform the work?
  6. What warranty or workmanship guarantee applies?
  7. What is the expected start date and completion window?
  8. How are change orders approved and priced?

Verify basic business details

For work that requires licensing or insurance in your area, verify those credentials using the appropriate state or local source. Keep a copy of the written quote and any changes.

Compare like for like

Two quotes are difficult to compare when one includes upgraded materials, hauling, or follow-up work and the other does not. Ask providers to clarify ambiguous line items before making a decision.

Bottom line

Keep the decision simple: verify who you are dealing with, understand the total cost, read the terms that affect you, and save the important details in writing.
